When people ask me what it’s really like to live in San Jose, they expect me to talk about schools, commute times and home values. Those matter. But after more than 20 years selling homes here, I can tell you the thing my clients mention most after they move in is how close they are to open space

You can leave a driveway in Cambrian and be on a ridgeline trail in Almaden Valley before your coffee gets cold. That’s not something most big metro areas can offer, and it’s one of the quiet reasons Santa Clara County holds its value.
Here are 10 parks I’d send any friend, client or new neighbor to. Every one of them is a short drive from home.

How Close Are These Parks to Cambrian and Willow Glen?
Most of the parks on this list are within 10 to 20 minutes of Cambrian or Willow Glen. A few of the bigger wilderness parks take a few minutes, and they’re worth every mile.

Drive times below are approximate and assume normal weekend traffic.

1. Almaden Quicksilver County Park

Distance: About 10 minutes from Cambrian

If you live in Cambrian or Almaden Valley, this is your backyard. Almaden Quicksilver covers more than 4,000 acres in the hills above south San Jose, with over 30 miles of trails for hiking, running and horseback riding.
What makes it special is the history. This was once one of the most productive mercury mines in North America, and you’ll still pass old mining structures and remnants along the trails. Stop by the New Almaden Quicksilver Mining Museum in the historic Casa Grande before or after your hike.
Best for: Hikers, trail runners, history buffs

2. Vasona Lake County Park

Distance: About 5 minutes from Cambrian

Vasona sits right on the edge of Los Gatos and is one of the easiest family parks in the county. There’s a reservoir, wide lawns, playgrounds and direct access to the Los Gatos Creek Trail.
Next door at Oak Meadow Park, the Billy Jones Wildcat Railroad has been giving kids rides for decades. And every winter, Vasona hosts Fantasy of Lights, a drive-through holiday display that’s become a local tradition.
Best for: Families, picnics, easy walks, bike rides on the creek trail

3. Santa Teresa County Park

Distance: About 15 minutes from Cambrian
Santa Teresa gives you big views of the valley without a long drive. The trails climb into the hills above south San Jose, and on a clear day you can see clear across to the Diablo Range.
The park is also home to the historic Bernal-Gulnac-Joice Ranch, one of the oldest ranch sites in the area. It’s a good reminder that south San Jose was ranch country long before it was suburbs.
Best for: Hikers, mountain bikers, sunset views

4. Martial Cottle Park

Distance: About 10 minutes from Cambrian

Martial Cottle is one of the most unique parks in the Bay Area. It’s a working agricultural park of roughly 290 acres, farmed by the same family for generations before it was donated to the public.
Today it’s managed jointly by the county and state, and you can walk paved paths past active crop fields, community garden plots and historic farm buildings. It’s flat, open and easy, which makes it great for strollers and evening walks.
Best for: Families, easy walks, anyone curious about the valley’s farming roots

5. San Jose Municipal Rose Garden

Distance: About 5 minutes from Willow Glen

This is a small park with a big reputation. The Municipal Rose Garden holds thousands of rose bushes and is one of the most photographed spots in the city. Peak bloom typically runs from late spring through early summer.
It’s surrounded by the Rose Garden neighborhood, one of the most architecturally interesting parts of San Jose, so plan a walk around the block afterward.
Best for: Photos, quiet strolls, date nights, out-of-town guests

6. Kelley Park

Distance: About 10 minutes from Willow Glen

Kelley Park is really three destinations in one. Happy Hollow Park and Zoo is a rite of passage for San Jose kids. The Japanese Friendship Garden, honoring San Jose’s sister city of Okayama, is one of the most peaceful places in the city. And History Park lets you walk through restored buildings from San Jose’s early days.
Best for: Families with young kids, history lovers, a slow Sunday

7. Rancho San Antonio County Park and Open Space Preserve

Distance: About 20 to 25 minutes from Cambrian or Willow Glen

Rancho San Antonio is one of the most popular trail systems on the Peninsula side of the valley, and for good reason. You can take an easy walk to Deer Hollow Farm, a working farm with animals, or push up the steeper trails toward the ridge for a serious workout.
Here’s the tip most locals learn the hard way: the parking lots fill early on weekends. Go first thing in the morning.
Best for: Serious hikers, families visiting the farm, early risers

8. Alum Rock Park

Distance: About 25 minutes from Willow Glen

Founded in 1872, Alum Rock is California’s oldest municipal park. It sits in a canyon along Penitencia Creek in the foothills of east San Jose, and in the early 1900s it was a mineral springs resort that drew visitors from all over the region.
You’ll still find remnants of the old mineral spring grottos along the creek. It feels a world away from the city, even though it’s technically inside it.
Best for: Creekside hikes, history, picnics in the shade

9. Joseph D. Grant County Park

Kip and Tam Barnard Group, San Jose real estate 7.

Distance: About 35 minutes from Willow Glen or Cambrian

Grant Park is the largest park in the county system, spread across thousands of acres of rolling hills along Mount Hamilton Road. This is where you go when you want real space: oak woodlands, open grassland, ponds and long ridgeline trails.
Spring is the best time to visit, when the hills are green and the wildflowers come out. Keep driving up the road afterward and you’ll reach Lick Observatory at the summit.
Best for: Long hikes, horseback riding, spring wildflowers, getting away without really leaving

10. Hellyer County Park

Kip and Tam Barnard Group, San Jose real estate 10.

Distance: About 15 minutes from Cambrian or Willow Glen

Hellyer is home to the Hellyer Park Velodrome, one of the oldest velodromes in the country. That steep, banked track has been hosting bike racing for decades, and on race nights you can watch riders hit speeds you won’t believe until you’re standing at the rail.

Beyond the velodrome, the park runs along Coyote Creek with shaded picnic areas, a small lake and direct access to the Coyote Creek Trail, one of the longest paved trails in San Jose. It’s an easy place to walk, ride or spend a low-key afternoon outdoors.

Best for: Cyclists, families, picnics, paved trail rides
Cambrian homeowners can reach Almaden Quicksilver, Vasona, Santa Teresa and Martial Cottle in about 15 minutes or less. Willow Glen residents have the Rose Garden, Kelley Park and the Los Gatos Creek Trail close by. That kind of access is a lifestyle feature, and buyers notice it.
