We spend a lot of time driving these neighborhoods, and somewhere along the way “just a quick stop” became a full-blown research project. So here are five ice cream shops worth every calorie, plus what to order when you get there. Four are right here in San Jose. One is just over the line in Santa Clara, and we thought it was worth the extra few minutes.
Cauldron Ice Cream (San Jose)
Handcrafted ice cream made to order with liquid nitrogen, which means you’re getting a little science-experiment theater with your dessert. It’s over-the-top in the best way and genuinely fun if you’ve got kids in tow.
Must try: the Puffle with Cookie Butter Bliss, served in a signature bubble-waffle cone.
Salt & Straw (Valley Fair)
Salt & Straw built its reputation on creative, seasonal flavors that rotate monthly, so there’s always something new on the board. Rich, creamy, and a little adventurous if you’re willing to stray from the usual.
Must try: Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons.
Smitten Ice Cream (Santana Row)
Another liquid-nitrogen spot, and the fast freeze gives it an ultra-creamy texture you can actually taste. The Santana Row location makes it an easy add-on to a shopping or dinner night.
Must try: Cookie Dough Chip, made to order.
Rocko’s Ice Cream Tacos (Santa Clara)
This one’s just outside San Jose, but we thought it was worth the extra few minutes. Exactly what it sounds like: handmade waffle tacos filled with premium ice cream. It’s a spectacle, it’s delicious, and it was basically engineered to be photographed.
Must try: the Ice Cream Taco with Cookies & Cream.
Willow Glen Creamery (San Jose)
A local favorite since 2002, known for creamy frozen custard, huge portions, and friendly neighborhood vibes. It’s also dog-friendly, so your pup gets a treat too. This one’s a Willow Glen institution for a reason.
Must try: Marble Blackberry, in a homemade waffle cone.
Make a Saturday Out of It
Half the fun is the drive between spots and seeing the neighborhoods along the way. That’s the part we love most about living here. Great ice cream is just the excuse.
