5 South Bay Burgers Worth the Bite (Local’s Guide)

Where can you get the best burger in the South Bay right now? From a 1948 charcoal institution in Campbell to a downtown San Jose wagyu smash newcomer, here are five spots locals actually drive across town for.

I’ve lived and worked in this valley long enough to have opinions about a lot of things. Burgers are one of them. These five range from decades-old neighborhood legends to a brand-new smash shop that already has a line out the door. Different vibes, all worth the calories.

Kirk’s Steakburgers, Campbell

The elder statesman. Kirk’s has been charbroiling patties over open charcoal since 1948, and the Campbell shop on S. Bascom is the one most of us grew up on. Fresh-ground meat delivered daily, hand-spun shakes, and that signature smoky char you only get from real flame. Classic burger-joint energy, zero pretension. If you want the South Bay’s roots on a plate, start here.

Dry Creek Grill, San Jose

Sitting right on the Willow Glen and Cambrian edge on Hamilton Ave, Dry Creek is the “grown-up” pick on this list. It’s a dinner-only, full-bar spot known for BBQ and steaks, but the Angus Prime Burger, thick-cut bacon, white cheddar, brioche, and their secret sauce, holds its own against anything in town. Great for date night when you want a burger but also a real wine list.

St. John’s Bar & Grill, Sunnyvale

A Sunnyvale staple since the late ’70s. St. John’s does 100% fresh ground chuck and a wall of variations, Cajun, hickory, bleu bacon, jalapeño, and the fan-favorite mushroom burger with Swiss. Big patio, full bar, and that curry ketchup people keep talking about. Unfussy, consistent, and a little old-school in the best way.

Happy Hound, Los Gatos

The roadside classic. Happy Hound has been slinging burgers, dogs, and legendary shakes on Los Gatos Blvd since 1971, and it still has that nostalgic burger-stand feel. The Happy Burger is one-third pound of griddled goodness with their house sauce. It’s the kind of spot where the counter staff remembers your order and nothing has changed in decades. On purpose.

Sixth St. Burger, San Jose

The new kid. Opened in 2025 in downtown near SJSU, Sixth St. is doing paper-thin 80/20 wagyu smash patties with crispy lacy edges, melty cheese, and beef tallow fries. Don’t miss the Smashburger Taco, three patties folded into a griddled tortilla with San Jose’s famous orange sauce. Proof the South Bay burger scene is still writing new chapters.

The Short List

  • Old-school charcoal: Kirk’s, Campbell
  • Sit-down date night: Dry Creek Grill, San Jose
  • Fresh chuck, endless options: St. John’s, Sunnyvale
  • Roadside nostalgia: Happy Hound, Los Gatos
  • New-school wagyu smash: Sixth St., San Jose

One of the underrated things about living in the South Bay is that great food is never more than a few minutes away, no matter which neighborhood you call home. It’s part of what makes people fall in love with a specific corner of this valley and never want to leave.

If you’re thinking about a move, whether it’s finding your spot closer to Willow Glen’s cafes or cashing out and starting a new chapter somewhere else, that’s the kind of local knowledge we bring to every conversation. Reach out anytime. Worst case, we swap burger recommendations.
