Summer in the South Bay has a sound to it. Lawn chairs unfolding on Civic Center grass, a bassline drifting across Plaza de César Chávez, somebody's kid learning to two-step in the Los Gatos shade. If you live here, you already know the season runs on free outdoor concerts. If you're new here, this is the calendar that gets pinned to the fridge.
We pulled together every major outdoor concert series across San Jose, Campbell, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, and Los Gatos so you can stop bookmarking eight different city websites and just go.
Music in the Park turns Plaza de César Chávez into downtown's biggest stage on select dates from July through September. This one isn't free, but tickets run low-cost and the lineup pulls real touring acts, so budget a little more than a typical park concert. Check mitpsj.com for the current schedule before you go, since dates shift year to year.
CityDance San Jose happens the third Thursday of the month at Plaza de César Chávez and the Circle of Palms. Free, live band, and yes, there are dance lessons if you've never two-stepped in your life. More info at sjmusart.org/citydance.
Summer Concert Series takes over Orchard City Green on Thursdays in July and August. It's the closest thing the South Bay has to a true block party, free and built for families. Details at campbellca.gov.
Concerts in the Park runs select Fridays at the Central Park Pavilion. Free entry, plenty of room for a picnic blanket and a dance floor. Full schedule at santaclaraca.gov.

Concerts on the Plaza runs Fridays, June through September, at Civic Center Plaza. Free, with lawn games for the kids while the music plays. Details at mountainview.gov.
Los Gatos shows up twice on this list, and honestly, it earns it.
Jazz on the Plazz runs every Wednesday evening at Town Plaza Park, free to the public, under the redwoods. This is one of the longest-running series in the region, produced by Los Gatos Music & Arts for more than two decades. Reserved seating is available if you want it, but the lawn works just fine. Schedule at jazzontheplazz.com.
Music in the Park (the Los Gatos version, not to be confused with San Jose's) runs Sunday afternoons on the Civic Center Lawn, free, and has been a community staple since 1988. Bring a picnic and plan to stay through sunset. Current schedule at losgatosca.gov.
